TransparentCars MCP server: connect ChatGPT to your used car in Portugal

Published August 29, 2026

Already using ChatGPT or Claude for everyday questions? Then you already own the missing piece for buying a cheap used car in Portugal with a clearer head. TransparentCars has built a connection — it is called an MCP server — that gives your AI assistant real, live access to our stock instead of leaving it to guess. This article explains, in plain English, what that is, why it matters if you are shopping for an affordable second-hand car, and how to connect it in about five minutes.

Buying a cheap used car in Portugal, with an assistant that actually knows the stock

Anyone shopping for a budget used car knows the feeling: a listing says 8,500 €, and you have no idea whether that is fair or a stretch. Then comes the question almost nobody asks in time — how much will this car cost me per year just to keep on the road, once you add road tax (IUC) and upkeep? An AI assistant on its own answers from what it "thinks". Connected to TransparentCars, it answers from our real data on cars that are already here in Portugal.

What an MCP server is (no jargon)

Picture ChatGPT or Claude as a smart assistant who works blindfolded: it knows a lot in general, but it cannot see what is happening today, here, in our stock. An MCP server is like handing it a direct line to our database. Instead of making things up or working from stale information, the assistant calls in, asks, and gets the right answer — current prices, cars in stock, the road-tax calculation.

MCP stands for "Model Context Protocol", a standard that AI assistants use to plug into live tools and data. You do not need to remember the acronym. The point is simple: with MCP, your assistant stops guessing and starts using real tools. TransparentCars publishes six of these tools, free and open, for anyone to connect to their assistant.

The questions you can now ask

Once connected, you talk to your assistant in plain language — there are no commands to memorise. Behind the scenes, it picks the right tool. A few practical examples:

  • "Is 8,500 € a fair price for this 2015 sedan?" — the assistant uses the check_fair_price tool and compares it against similar cars on the market, giving you a price range and a verdict: fair, high or low. You can see the same logic on our fair-price check.
  • "What will this car cost me per year, including road tax (IUC)?" — this is where cost_to_own comes in, estimating the yearly IUC and framing what it costs to run the car. If you want to understand this tax better, we have a dedicated page on IUC road tax.
  • "Show me budget Volkswagens under 10,000 € in your stock." — the assistant calls search_inventory and filters our stock by make, model, fuel, gearbox and maximum price.
  • "Can you put me in touch with a human?" — the contact_me tool sends a contact request to our team (only with your permission). On the other end there are people, not a bot. You can also reach us from the sell your car page if that is what you need.

There are two more helper tools: get_car, which pulls the full details of one specific car, and list_makes_models, which gives the assistant the right make-and-model vocabulary so it does not muddle the names.

How to connect (about five minutes)

You do not need to be technical. There are two routes, depending on what your assistant accepts:

  • Remote connection (the easy one): in your assistant's connector or tool settings, add the address https://transparent.pt/mcp. That is it. It works with assistants that support remote MCP servers.
  • Local install: if you prefer to run it on your own computer, use the package npx -y transparentcars-mcp. Same service, running from your machine.

It works with ChatGPT and with Claude, and with other assistants that speak MCP. No key and no sign-up — it is a free, public service. If you like the technical side, every tool is described in our OpenAPI file, and our free API lets you wire the same tools into your own programs. You can read the full story on our AI and MCP page.

An honest note

The TransparentCars promise is simple: the price you see is the price you pay. We apply the same honesty to this tool. The fair-price and yearly-cost estimates are approximate — they are there to guide you, not to replace an inspection or a proper conversation. We sell local used cars that are already in Portugal; we are not importers. The assistant helps you decide better informed, but the decision, and the car, are always yours.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be tech-savvy to use this?

No. If you can add an address in your ChatGPT or Claude settings, you know enough. After that, you just ask in plain language.

Does this cost anything?

No. The TransparentCars MCP server and API are public and free, with no access key and no sign-up.

Can I trust the assistant's answers?

The stock and price data come from our real records. The fair-price and IUC figures are estimates to support your decision. To close a deal, talk to us — there is always a person on the other end.
